Steeply Sloped Home Renovation – Mosman
Built on a steep block in Mosman, this 1960’s home was built in the “Sydney School” style of architecture and offers spectacular views of Balmoral Beach. This architectural period valued the use of natural, rustic materials such as clinker bricks and timbers. They were often built on steep slopes and used natural bushland, raked roof lines and low gutter lines to conceal the home from the street.
The renovation involved raising the floor level and adapting part of the roof’s pitch to create an open plan kitchen, dining and living room. To achieve this, some steel framework and other materials needed to be craned onto the site. The steep slope made this task highly challenging.
Wherever possible, existing materials were retained or repurposed. The new floor uses recycled timber. The staircase stringer and treads use the beams from the original house to help preserve its history.
The Red Cedar Construction team were proud to be associated with such a beautiful renovation that brought new life to an architectural queen. When the renovation was completed, this home was featured in Australian Home Beautiful Magazine.
