This was a staged project for Red Cedar Constructions. We built the rear self contained granny flat first having alot of fun with the client in creating a functional yet interesting space. The client was keen to add many different design flares in the 30m2 area. The contemporary joinery includes pull down bed and kitchenette juxtaposed against the two structural timber collar-ties in the ceiling which are recycled timber sleepers and a sliding custom Corten door which sections off the bathroom area that includes Boffi full height shower, basin and overhead shelving. Combine this with polished concrete floor, Corten roofing, automated skylights and we think it’s one of the coolest granny flats ever!
A few years later…. the ’70’s rear extension of the main house was renovated. Once again the theme was old meets new. The original cottage was revamped, repainted with all rot removed. Then a beautiful elegant kitchen and powder room was added. Featuring double height ceiling, skylights, expansive glass windows to the rear but the hero throughout was the new Chevron patterned recycled European oak flooring. It is magnificent especially the double border running around the walls and kitchen island! It’s also the little details; the splashback is one piece of glass – over 4m long; the joinery draws have mitred edge that mimic the 45 degrees angles of the flooring; and the table at the end of the island is floating. Such a fun project, so many laughs along the way.
